Drill
Drilling is the idea that sometimes you need to step back from the learning environment and focus on one single thing to improve, and improving that thing ruthlessly. This is the opposite of the previous idea of directness, but used in tandem it results in rapid learning.
One way to use the drill strategy is to isolate a specific idea or skill, using the [[Feynman Technique]] or time-slicing (focusing on one instance in time) accordingly. There is also the copy-cat method where you can copy and contrast what you're doing with an expert and try to get better and better.
Retrieval
The best way to test to see if you know something is to see if you can retrieve it from [[memory]], this also happens to be the best way to actually study and learn something. This is because the more [[Cognitive Load|cognitive load]] it takes to remember something the more likely you are to remember it. It is also a direct way to study for a test because on tests you usually have to retrieve you information.
